A Time to Rejoice & Remember:                Advent, December 4th

12/4/2016

        We invite you and your family to join us for advent this season, as we consider Christmas through the lens of Scripture. As we celebrate the birth of the Christchild, we will look as a different aspect of his coming each day. Each day also has a downloadable coloring picture for children to color as they listen, and then hang on the tree as a reminder! We also suggest a song to listen to, play, or sing along with. Most of these can be found in a hymnal to play at home, or on youtube.com - to sing along with! Children old enough to read might enjoy reading the Scripture as well. We hope this simple journey through Scripture helps you and your family to focus on Christ this season - He truly is The Greatest Gift.

Ornament: A camel (Representing the call to Abram)
Scripture Reading: Genesis 12:1-7 and  Romans 4:13-16;
Songs:
Father Abraham, Trust and Obey, I Have Decided to Follow Jesus

     Sometimes God asks us to do things that are hard to do, or maybe things we don’t understand. It would be easy to do what was right if it was always the easy thing, or the fun thing. But following God is sometimes hard. Have you ever known something was right...but had a hard time doing it? I have.
     It was sure hard for Abram, in the Bible. God asked Abram to take a long trip, to leave his home behind. He had to live in tents, cross deserts, and take his family away from everyone they knew. Abram didn't even know where he was going! He just had to follow God.  This camel reminds us of that long journey. But, God also promised Abram that when he got to the land God was going to give him, he would be blessed by God. God also promised Abram that through his family, the whole world would be blessed.
     Abram obeyed God. Now, he still had problems, especially a few times when he made a bad choice, and didn't listen to God’s instructions. But God remembered His promises to Abram. God called Abram His friend – isn’t that wonderful? God also was working on His plan to send a Savior to save us from his sin...and it turns out that it was through Abram’s family that  Jesus was born!

Questions:
  • Would you have been afraid to travel away from home to a strange land?
  • Did Abram obey all the time?
  • Because Abram believed God, who did God promise would come from his family? (blessing - and that blessing was Jesus!)

 Prayer: Holy God, thank you that Abram obeyed and followed you when you called him. Please help us to obey You, to follow Your leading. We want to be called “the friend of God” too.  And through our lives, like Abram’s, may other people be blessed. In the name of Jesus, amen.
