A Time to Rejoice & Remember:                Advent December 6th

12/6/2016

We invite you and your family to join us for advent this season, as we consider Christmas through the lens of Scripture. As we celebrate the birth of the Christchild, we will look as a different aspect of his coming each day. Each day also has a downloadable coloring picture for children to color as they listen, and then hang on the tree as a reminder! We also suggest a song to listen to, play, or sing along with. Most of these can be found in a hymnal to play at home, or on youtube.com - to sing along with! Children old enough to read might enjoy reading the Scripture as well. We hope this simple journey through Scripture helps you and your family to focus on Christ this season - He truly is The Greatest Gift.

Ornament: Jacob’s Ladder
Scripture Reading: Genesis 28:10-17
Songs:
Climbing Jacob’s Ladder; Surely Goodness and Mercy; O Come, O Come, Emmanuel

Yesterday we talked about how a Lamb died in Isaac’s place.  Well, Isaac lived and when he grew up he had two sons. One of them was named Jacob. Oh, Jacob was not always a good person. He was  unkind and tricked his brother. Then, instead of saying he was sorry, he ran away. He lived away from his family for many years, but finally he knew it was time to meet with his brother and try to make things right.
When Jacob ran away from his family, he might have felt like he was running away from God, too. But can we ever go to a place where God isn’t? (no!) So, the night before he was to meet with his brother, God made Jacob dream a strange and wonderful dream. Jacob dreamed that there was a ladder going all the way to heaven. He dreamed there were angels going up and down the ladder, and God was standing at the top. God (in his dream) told Jacob that from his family, Jesus would be born.
When Jacob woke up, he knew that God was always with him, even though he thought he had run away. Jacob would never be the same!

Questions:
  • What did Jacob see in his dream? What did that mean to Jacob? (a sort of heavenly ladder...he realized God was always with him)
  • Is God always with us? How can we know? (Yes - He says he is with us in many places: Joshua 1:9, Matt. 28:20, Hebrew 13:5, Romans 8:38-39...and more!)

Prayer:
Dear Lord, please remind me every day that You are with us and love us. How comforting to know that we are never all alone, but You are there and will never leave us. Thank You for providing a way for us to be with You forever. In Christ’s name, amen.
