A Time to Rejoice & Remember:                Advent, December 8th

12/8/2016

We invite you and your family to join us for advent this season, as we consider Christmas through the lens of Scripture. As we celebrate the birth of the Christchild, we will look as a different aspect of his coming each day. Each day also has a downloadable coloring picture for children to color as they listen, and then hang on the tree as a reminder! We also suggest a song to listen to, play, or sing along with. Most of these can be found in a hymnal to play at home, or on youtube.com - to sing along with! Children old enough to read might enjoy reading the Scripture as well. We hope this simple journey through Scripture helps you and your family to focus on Christ this season - He truly is The Greatest Gift.

Ornament: Two Tablets – The Ten Commandments
Scripture Reading: Ex. 32:15-18, 20:1-20, Ps.119:11
Songs:
Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus, The Perfect Ten (YouTube),

Joseph’s family lived in Egypt a long time. But, the Egyptians started to treat them badly. Finally, the Egyptians made them all slaves. After many, many years, Joseph’s family (the people of Israel), finally left Egypt. When they left, God gave them ten rules to help them treat each other well. These rules are called the Ten Commandments. They are still good rules!

 I. We should love God and obey Him.
II. Not to ever worship anyone or anything but God.
III. Never use God’s name as a curse or joke – respect His name.
IV. Make the Sabbath day a special day to worship God.
V. Respect our parents and obey them.
VI. Do not murder anyone.
VII. We should be true and faithful to our husband or wife.
VIII. Do not steal.
IX. We should not tell lies.
X. We should not be jealous of what our friends have.

Sadly, the people of Israel could not keep these rules. They kept breaking them. Knowing the law wasn’t enough. Having the ten good rules for living didn't help the people be more like God, but it sure showed them how many wrong things they did. The law didn't change their hearts. God would need to send Jesus to change people’s hearts.

        Questions:
  • How many of the Ten Commandments can you remember?
  • Does our family have rules? Why? (to help us get along)

Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for helping us understand how to live for You. You gave the people of Israel Ten Commandments, and when that was not enough, You gave us Your Son Jesus to set us free from sin. We are so grateful for your amazing love for us!  Amen.

Blessings,
Cara & Patti
