For ever since the creation of the world His invisible nature and attributes, that is, His eternal power and divinity, have been made intelligible and clearly discernible in and through the things that have been made (His handiwork). So men are without excuse.
– Romans 1:20
The complexities and intricacies of our Creator's design just stop me, breathless.
Now, I realize that the weather where I live is ridiculously ahead of schedule, and in fact a chill breeze is currently blowing in storm clouds as a reminder of winter, but we are seeing the first blooms on our peach and almond trees, the first pushing-ups of the heads of daffodils, and the first glimmer of the golden-green buds that will soon unfold into spring. Each tiny bloom reaches delicate yellow stamens towards the sun as its petal-skirt stretches open to reveal its showy fuchsia-tinted eye; each slender green pointed stalk, arising through the dirt calls a resurrection to my heart during this Lent season; each tightly wrapped balloon-bud near bursting with leaf is a promise of things to come.
Truly, the nature of God is revealed in his creation. He attentive care is seen in each detail, each stroke of his genius brush. His omnipotence to call life from death is echoed in the reemergence of new life from the old death of winter. His omniscience is underlying every glorious wonder around us. The complexities of the snowflake crystals are designed by His pen. The flashing colors of the winter sunsets, sinking into deeply colored horizons shadowed by flaming clouds, are the quick strokes of His brush.
Truly, as Romans reminds us, man is without excuse. Stand and look at the marvel of creation – of a single icicle hanging from an eave, or a sunset, a flower, a pearl. I am transfixed by the delicacy and the intricacy of His creation because it represents an artist who has unlimited power, knowledge, ability, and love. It reminds me that He values beauty, order, and grace. It reminds me of the nature of God.
