You know, we wanted to tell you about some of the things we are thankful for – but we quickly realized how trite and cliché that would sound. Things that are often repeated become cliché, no matter how true they may be. Really, our thankfulness to God and gratitude for our families and friends is no different from what thousands and thousands of you are trying to express this holiday.
But, then there is the donkey thing. When we started this journey, in January, God really impressed upon us both that we did not have to worry or fret about what to do or say. Like the donkey that bore Christ into Jerusalem, our job was simply to carry Jesus to people. That’s all.
And this year we have been privileged to carry Christ to many different locations, to speak of our Lord and Savior to hundreds and hundreds of regular people in regular places. Just occasionally, we hear that God has changed a mind or a heart. Sometimes people tell us that they really heard God through his word for the first time as they were reading the daily devotions from the books, Classic Christianity, A Year of Timeless Devotions, Vol I & II.
You know what the most amazing thing is? We had absolutely nothing to do with it. Like a surfer riding a wave, we simply tried to hold on as the Holy Spirit pushed us along. While we were writing up our Papa’s sermons, when we went to publish the books, as we have made each and every decision along the way, we have always realized it was all God. He has flung open doors as we tentatively step through them. And we are so very humbled and grateful.
God is so good, friends! He provides what we didn’t even know we needed.
“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8
If you know that – if you believe and rely on the death of Christ to release you from the bondage of sin, to be the key to your eternal future, to be the all-access pass to a relationship with God that will bring purpose and passion to your life on this earth and ever after – then you truly have a reason to celebrate. Happy Thanksgiving, 2012.
With prayer,
