We know they were learned men. These wise men of the East had studied the stars and the ancient writings for years - watching and waiting for this time. They were of high rank, and would thus have traveled with a retinue of quite some size.
Even more important than their qualifications, background, or personal history, we know that they persisted. They followed.
Sometimes we try to discover details, when it is the great visible facts that are critical. Just so, more important than knowing details about the wise men, is just understanding that they made a tremendous journey across the desert in search of one small baby boy because they believed.
The magi's faith challenges us across the centuries. They did not merely philosophize about the star, nor try to explain it away. They followed it.
“Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.” Matthew 2:1-2
Their following led them to the Son of God. When they found him, they worshipped; and they gave of themselves. These important men humbled themselves before a baby, presenting gifts of great value to this little King of Kings.
Remember, only in Him can hope be found - hope for the nations, for mankind, and for eternity. Only in Jesus can I find hope for my life and my family.
Yes - let us follow the star with which God has crossed our path, for He is faithful to lead His beloved. And when we find Jesus, let us humbly worship Him, offering whatever we have in service to Him.
Wise men have done that for centuries.
Dear Father, we purpose right now to follow. We want to follow Jesus, to honor and worship Him, and to serve Him. May our every step draw us nearer. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Blessings as you celebrate Christ's birth,
