"Why" was her favorite word. And we'd better be quick about answering or she'd be off to another topic before we could finish.
She absorbed information like a shop-vac and puzzled about everything. "Why do the birds hop? Why are goldfish shiny? Why CAN"T I play with the TV knobs?" This little mind wondered about more things than I could supply answers for. But sometimes God helps out a harried parent with an unexpected angel.
We were in the pharmacy waiting room with her 2 week-old baby brother. She stroked his arm and suddenly darted toward a lovely African-American couple with a new baby of their own sitting across from us. She leaned on the woman's lap and stared at the baby swathed in pink and lace. She looked up at the mother and (as I sank into my seat) said " Our baby's peach," with a questioning look. I knew what would come next. There had to be some kind of "why?" in there. Before I could react to gather her back, the woman smiled and said sweetly, "that's because God is so kind to give us each our favorite color."
Those wise and beautiful words made perfect sense to my dynamo and she came back to me already chattering about something else. As the week of remembering Martin Luther King's birthday passes, let's not cease to give thanks for the kindness of God. We are all glorious creations in His garden. May we give Him praise for the many colors, temperaments, customs, personalities, and viewpoints that make the fabric of humanity rich and varied, interesting and unique. And, let us embrace each other with kindness and love as a perfect stranger did for my precious little girl.
This I command you, to love one another John 15:17
Blessings,
