Nearly a hundred years later, Lincoln, in his historic address at Gettysburg, said the Civil War, then raging, tested “whether this nation or any nation so conceived and so dedicated can long endure.” Yet, our country survived and grew even stronger.
Now, on July 4, 2016, we in the United States seem as divided as anytime since Lincoln. As the mists of upheavals, rumored attacks, and political machinations pass before our eyes, we watch the clouds part to see ... that star-spangled banner still waving, still standing for freedom, justice, and the rule of law.
This national birthday will once again be celebrated, as John Adams foresaw, with, “pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations..." Yet, at the same time, God is calling us.
Are we fervent in praying for our leaders, as Scripture commands? Do we intercede for them, asking for wisdom and guidance as they lead this land? We must. Before the throne of grace we can find unity, peace, and wisdom.
“Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence.” 1 Tim. 2:1-2
Today, let us purpose to show brotherliness, the heart of a peacemaker, and humility in dealing with our fellow citizens - yes, even those of a different political stripe.
Today, let us begin to repent for our national sins.
Yes, there are problems facing our country today. Yes, some of our leaders have failed us. But all men are Lilliputians in the presence of these problems. No man or woman, in their puffed-up pride, holds the key to our future.
Almighty God, not the mind of man, holds the future, and the answer to what lies ahead. And us? We must pray, as He has directed, and look to Him alone.
Dear Heavenly Father, today we pray for our leaders.
For our President, we ask wisdom and a humble heart.
For those in Congress, we ask for Your leading in peacemaking and decisions. For our governors, and other statesmen, we ask that they would deal in integrity and honor.
Lord, we ask that we would remain free to live quiet and peaceable lives, in all godliness and reverence. Amen.
