By now, you have probably seen the video KONY 2012. This video has been seen by something like 75 million people. It is sparking a movement to take down the #1 war criminal in the world, a man named Kony who is the head of the LRA in Uganda. He steals children. He forces them to kill their parents. He turns them into sex slaves and child soldiers. He is evil
incarnate.
There is also plenty of argument rising up. People“exposing” various viewpoints – there are survivors of Kony, saying he is not the worst. People are also questioning the motives of the organization that made the video. Some feel it is naïve and possibly even will make matters worse to try to take Kony down. It’s quite an ideological battlefield out there right now.
The one thing that is not up for debate is the fact that this man is evil. He is.
Evil in this world always seems to take us by surprise. Somehow, the fact that one human being could do such horrendous things to other human beings still manages to shock us. After Jeffrey Dahmer. After Ted Bundy. After Adolf Hitler. We still believe that humans are basically good, and the occasional evil dictator or heinous criminal doesn’t sway us from our
rose-colored glasses point of view.
But that’s not what the Bible says.
The Bible warns us, in II Tim 3:13 that “evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived.” In Genesis 6 – in that very beginning of man’s story – God sees that man’s heart is inclined to evil. “…Every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually,” is the description of man. Jeremiah 17:9 states it plainly, “The
heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked. Who can know it?”
And what is to be our answer? “Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good,” Romans 12:9 instructs us. You see, “good” is powerful. “Good” is a secret weapon of warfare in this age of so much bad. To do good for God is to align ourselves with God. To return good for evil is a spiritual law, a challenge to our own hearts, and a cause we can seek in every corner of our lives.
You see, goodness has gotten a bad rap as a weak or somehow Pollyanna-ish trait. But it is not. It is God-like. It is imitation of Christ. It indicates strength of character.
Goodness hates evil. It is virtue equipped for action. Goodness is an upright soul.
Want a purpose – a grand, powerful purpose? “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”Ephesians 2:10. Find the good God has for you to do, and start doing it. Align yourself with Him in this world. The people of the world need to see some good, friend. Far away in Uganda, or in your own home
and workplace, the world desperately needs the good that comes only from God. Virtue, acting in Jesus’ name. There’s something we can all agree on!
