- Matthew 28:6-7a
Today we celebrate good news from about the last place we would expect it - a graveyard. The empty tomb and the risen Christ are the best news the world has ever received, and the only news that can change eternity.
When Mary and the other women heard the angel proclaim, “He is not here…” they ran to tell the disciples. They ran to spread the good news, to bid the weeping to rejoice.
It is good news, because today resounds with the truth: God so loved the world that He sent His son to die for our sin.
It is good news of the indestructibility of human life lived for Him. Jesus met death and conquered it. Long before, Job had cried, “If a man die, will he live again?” and here is the answer. Because Christ lives, we too shall live.
It is good news that brings forgiveness of the past. The blood of Jesus Christ keeps on cleansing from all sin! He carried the curse of the world in his body to the tree, and it is done.
This good news, purchased on the cross and presented to us through the resurrection, dignifies our lives with eternal value. It invests all of life with heavenly significance. It enriches life with increased gladness as we realize the depth of God’s love and concern for us. It quiets life with peace as we come to understand our assured place in the body of Christ.
We are empowered today, possessing the peace of a forgiven past and clothed in a confidence that life is indestructible, assured of immortality through the risen Christ
We are the Church! We too can bid the weeping ones rejoice, can bid the weary come and rest, and bid the sinful come repent and be forgiven. For, He is risen from the dead!
Dear Jesus, Praise Your name! You have conquered sin and triumphed over death. You have replaced our weeping with rejoicing, our sin with victory, and our certain death with life eternal. May we bear witness boldly, in the name of our living Lord Jesus, amen.
For the Glory of the Risen One! -
