5 Cents Worth of Advice

I heard it again this morning. It was just a joke, really, “Wow, what a day – I need a drink  already.”

We run to so many things when we’re really stressed. But, it reveals something, doesn’t it? In our society, drink is an acceptable escape. So  is food, or maybe shopping, or getting lost in a TV program. Some of us cry on our friends’ shoulders. Some of us become vindictive, or vengeful, finding some release in thinking about how we could get back at whatever hurt us. Some people run. Some pull away.

But to really get our heads right about stress, we have to turn our hearts and minds to Christ. He helps us put things in proper perspective. He orders our thoughts aright. When we let Him, he can give us peace in the middle of the storm. He is our Alpha and Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.
·     He tells us (Romans 8:38-39) that nothing can take us from Him.
·     He reminds us (Jeremiah 29:11) that He is on our side and has great plans for us.
·     He challenges us (2 Cor 10:15) to take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.
·     He reminds us of the solution (Philippians 4:6, 7) “do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

A drink won’t solve the problem. In fact, historically that just worsens problems. Food, shopping, withdrawing…none of them are real answers, they are only ways to take our minds off the situation for a little while, and they aren’t always even effective distractions.

This time Linus has it right. Sound Theology - a right understanding of God and His interactions with man – really is the key.
Blessings - Cara
