When Jesus entered the City of Jerusalem, He revealed Himself as King of Kings and Lord of Lords. He came in humility, not pomp. He came to fulfill our needs, not His. Can you imagine what the reign of this King will look like?
As the person of the King, Jesus is none other than the Promised One, born in Bethlehem, crucified at Calvary, raised from a borrowed tomb and now the head of the Church. He transcends all other kings that have sat upon a throne and when He sits upon the throne of His Glory, the world will see the most glorious personage and potentate ever to have ruled over man. Yet he came to us humbly, born in a stable, and riding on a donkey.
Jesus reveals what truly just use of power is. Power has been the quest of modern and ancient man. Men, by scheming and military victories have tasted that power only to make a record of abuse, oppression, tragedy, and destruction. It has been said that power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. But the power of the Lord Jesus Christ will be used to reign in justice and equity, and righteousness will fill the earth. His fulfillment of justice on our behalf is what led him to submit to the cross - for us.
And what will be the province of this King? - the Kingdom over which His is to reign? Zechariah tells us that he is to be King over all the earth. The Psalmist tells us that those who dwell in the wilderness will bow before Him and that all will kneel. He will be King of all, yet He gave all for us at Calvary.
When Jesus came as a babe, He came to stake out spiritual territory, to purchase our freedom, to create relationship with His own. When Jesus comes again, He will deal with evildoers justly, but will also reign as Prince of Peace. It will be a time of universal worship, righteousness, and blessing.
On Palm Sunday of long ago, worshippers called out, "Hosanna," - and rightly so. Today, as we look back at that day we also rejoice in the hard path Jesus walked for us. But as we look forward to the coming back of this King Jesus, we can truly rejoice in the person, the power, the province of such a One. He loves us, He made a way for us to come into relationship with Him. Rejoice, indeed. Hosanna...and even so, Lord Jesus, come!
Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Amen
Glory to His Name!
